So here is my short oneshot fanfiction of Jade, a woman who has lost the love of her life, Brandon Carver and has found herself in the arms of Alden. A sweet former saviour who has now become a vital part of her life when suddenly her love has returned.
If you've seen The walking dead past the tenth season then you know who i'm talking about and if not then there is still this little cover I made on Canva to refresh your memory.
As for the disclaimer part that I would like to add before I begin. This story is a work of fiction that I wrote with characters and a setting that I obviously do not own. (If I did you would be seeing my stories on TV and not here). Neither do I own the pictures that I used to make the cover on Canva. They are, like the characters, borrowed since this is just a manifestation of my love for the series and not an attempt to earn of it. The only thing I own in this story are my Original characters. With that said I hope you enjoy reading it. P.S : Just so you know, English is not my first language, so I apologize in advance if there are any mistakes in my story.
Brandon Carver.
That was the name that made Jade’s heart flutter every time she heard it. The name that was constantly going through her head and the name hidden inside her heart. It was also a name she never heard again after the apocalypse started and they got separated.
Not unless she said the name herself, but then again who wanted to hear the story of how she let go of her fiancé’s hand in the middle of a giant herd and after spending months of searching never found him again, all the while everyone around her were losing people they loved and unlike Jade, they had no hope of finding each other again.
Jade laid with her eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling. He had to be alive right? But even if he was alive, would he still want me back? She wondered. Her back cracked a little on the stiff mattress she was laying on, so she started tossing and turning to find just the right spot.
“Brandon,” she muttered to herself.
Her heart fluttered but it was but an inkling of what she felt for him and after all these years she still missed him.
“Dreaming of Brandon again?” Alden asked softly.
He lay on his side with his face pointing towards Jade. Without hesitation she turned herself on her side and put her face right next to Alden’s. His warm brown eyes studied her movements.
“No. Just thinking about him, about the night I lost him.”
“I know you loved him,” Alden said. He put his hand on her neck and slowly caressed her cheek. His eyes were not filled with jealousy nor envy, instead they were filled with compassion and love.
Jade never knew what she did to deserve Alden. She pulled him in, put her hand on his neck and kissed him passionately.
He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her closer to him, eagerly returning her kiss. She slowly pulled her head back a bit and looked at him.
“I loved him. I still do, but I love you too.”
“I know, I love you too,” he said without a hint of hesitation. “I don’t mind. Everyone has a past just look at me.”
“I suppose you’re right, a former savior certainly has a past,” she giggled. A wide grin grew on his face when he made her smile. It was that moment, the moment of pure happiness, when the alarms went off.
They quickly got out of bed and reached for some clothes when Jerry came running in.
“We’re under attack!” He yelled, he threw two handguns and a rifle into the room and ran to the next, with his trolley full of loaded guns in his tail.
“Do you have your knife?” Jade asked. Her heart started beating faster and faster thinking of what’s to come.
“Yeah, do you?” Alden asked, as he put one of the handguns in the back of his pants and handed one to her.
He checked the ammo of the rifle before he opened the door and motioned for her to follow him.
“Yeah. Let’s go,” Jade said.
They ran straight to the high wooden fence that surrounded hilltop and stayed on the ground next to Jerry.
The fighting could be heard from where they were standing.
Hilltop hadn’t been attacked in a long time and Maggie started fearing that their soldiers were getting rusty. At the time she mentioned it, it seemed like a problem for another day.
But hearing her heart beat so loudly in her chest and the men and women panting and trembling behind the wooden wall, Jade’s heart shrank.
We have indeed grown rusty. Next time we will listen to you Maggie, Jade thought to herself. Let’s just hope there is a next time.
Alden put his hand on her shoulder and squeezed in it. His eyes looked as if they were saying be careful and Jade tried to emulate the same look except, she could only look at him with a sad smile on her face. She couldn’t lose him like she did Brandon. She would do everything in her power to keep him safe, even if it was to jump in front of him.
"What's happening?' Siddiq asked, he came rushing outside straightening his shirt and fastening his belt.
"The alarm went off, that's all we know." Jade said.
A loud grunt came from behind them, and they all looked at Daryl who was in the middle of loading his crossbow.
"It's not those stupid masks wearing bimbo hot shots who we keep running into, it seems like a couple of former saviors from Alexandria have started to protest against Maggie outside the wall,' he said.
"Like a peaceful protest?" Jerry asked.
"Would we be armed if it was a peaceful protest?" Jade scoffed and hid her mouth to cover the laugh that came out. Alden patted Jerry on the back before turning a side eye towards Jade. Her laugh, however, was infectious and Alden couldn’t help but grin.
"Anyhow," Jade said confidently, "Let’s go and put this protest on its last leg."
They took out their guns and made their way to the westside of the wall.
'Two at a time. Stay close!' Daryl said before he started climbing completely disregarding his own command. With a little sigh Jade locked her fingers together and motioned for Alden to use it as a step.
The moment he steadied his feet he reached down and pulled Jade up. They were halfway over the wooden wall when the screaming began.
"They started shooting!' Jerry screamed. "Hurry up!"
Jade and Alden kept climbing until they reached the top.
They looked down and saw that Daryll had moved some soft branches and leaves into a pile to catch the fall. He stood with his crossbow aimed at the trees in case someone noticed them and motioned for someone to jump.
Without hesitation Alden jumped, landed on the pile of leaves and branches and made a head roll. He landed on his feet and looked up to Jade. He nodded and aimed his gun at the woods alongside Daryll. Jerry and Siddiq started climbing as Jade was preparing herself to jump until suddenly it felt like she was being watched.
Her neck was tingling, and she turned around to see that the stupid masks wearing bimbo hot shots as Daryll called them were invading Hilltop from behind.
“Reapers, six o’clock!” Jade yelled as she aimed her rifle at one of the masked men and took two shots. She could feel the blowback on her shoulder but to her satisfaction, she could also see that one of the bullets was a hit.
“Catch the rifle!” Jade yelled down and Alden put his gun back into his pants so he could hold his arms up to catch the rifle.
She carefully dropped the rifle into his hands and without hesitation jumped off the wall, back into Hilltop.
“Jade!” Alden yelled in frustration as she heard him bang on the wall with the rifle. “Get over here!”
“The reapers are a bigger threat to deal with then those former saviors!” Jade yelled back.
She nodded to Siddiq who had decided he, along with Darryl, who had climbed over the wall for the second time, would fight alongside her against the reapers whilst Jerry went over to help Alden.
‘You were one of them, go talk to them. I’m sure you can get them to back down. I will see you when the fighting is over in our room. Oké?” she asked.
But next to the gunshots there was only silence on his side of the wall.
“Oké?” She asked again, louder this time.
“Yes! I will meet you in our room.” Alden said with a worried voice before following Jerry to the heart of the riot.
“Ready for this?” Darryl asked.
“Anytime,” she answered with a forced smile as she took her gun and followed Daryll. They made a triangle formation with Darryl in the front, Siddiq on the right side and Jade on the left. They moved slowly but steadily to the RVs.
People were running, screaming, taking the children and hiding and some were grabbing their guns.
Jade, Darryl and Siddiq had nearly reached the campsite when the reapers were no longer in sight and silence had befallen Hilltop.
Several dead bodies lay on the ground where a few overwhelmed people of Hilltop had fallen.
“We split up.” Darryl said in a low voice and before waiting on their answer he leaped forward and ducked behind a barrel next to an RV.
Jade leaped to the left and ducked behind the opposing RV. She crawled underneath it and found the hidden emergency rifles.
She loaded one and aimed at the open field where the RVs were pointed at.
It wasn’t a sniper’s rifle, but it had to do for now. In the corner of her eye, she could see Darryl and Siddiq closing in on a wandering reaper that had his back turned to them.
Darryl and Siddiq were almost in the position when suddenly two more reapers appeared behind them, armed with guns and axes.
Jade aimed but before she could pull the trigger, she felt a strong and forceful pull on her leg. Her chin fell onto her rifle and with the sudden weight that fell onto her rifle her arm got squashed underneath it. She grabbed onto anything her hands could grab onto until there were claw marks left all over the cold ground as the reaper pulled her out from under the RV.
A high-pitched scream escaped her voice as she kicked at the reaper that was towering over her, but it was no use. The masked man with an armory of weapons strapped to his limbs stood there silently. It was like he was frozen for a split second before he awoke and dragged her further away from the RV.
She reluctantly complied as her hand was slowly gliding toward the gun in the back of her pants when he took his mask off.
His dark curly locks surrounded his face as his dark eyes looked into the depts of her soul. Realization set in and Jade gasped as he carefully covered her mouth. The gun fell from her hands as she pulled him from the ground and embraced him.
“Shhht,” he whispered as he let go of her mouth and returned her embrace. She could feel his strong hand pull her closer to him. The scent of pinecones found its way into her nose as she smelled his old, muddied jacket.
“Let me up,” Jade whispered as she gave him a push to give her some space. Brandon nodded and quickly got up to his feet before extending his hand to her.
“I thought you were dead,” Jade said as she embraced him once again to make sure that he was real and that this was not a dream. This was amazing news. She had found a perfect place to live, amazing friends with whom she did not mind being on guard duty with and now her love had returned. Her mind started racing as she thought of all the people, she couldn’t wait to introduce Brandon to.
Siddiq, Jerry, Michonne, Maggie and even Daryl would grow to like him. And then she could finally introduce him to Alden- the blood drained from her cheeks and Brandon frowned as his eyes filled with worry.
“Are you alright, honey?” he said as he pulled her close again. He put his weapon to his side and wrapped his arm around her and for a moment she could no longer hear all the screaming and the gunfire. It all sounded like it was from a distance.
Alden… shit, Jade thought as she tried to look around her, searching for his face, but Brandons strong arms blocked her view. She had to explain it. She had to explain it to them both but before she could say anything he took her by the waist and carried her away from the rioting saviors, away from the other reapers who were using the riot as a fine opportunity, away from her friends and away from Alden. Jade could have stopped him. She could have grabbed his head and pulled all her weight to one side so he would lose his balance. She could have used the knife he always used to wear near the back of his neck to stop him from taking her away, but it all felt so good. His presence reminded her of safer times. So instead of doing any of the things that crossed her mind she did nothing but cling to his neck as he kept running deeper into the woods. He didn’t stop until they reached the encampment that the reapers used as their temporary outpost. There he could finally put her down, despite her heart wishing for him to hold on to her.
“Brandon I- “
“Shhht,” he said as he put his finger on her lips. He looked behind him towards the only other reaper that had been left in the camp. The reaper walked closer to them. silently and deadly and suddenly Jade recognized the way the reaper walked. The hair that came from under the mask and the playful sigh the reaper made as Brandon put his arm in front of Jade to protect her.
“Leah!” Jade called out as she ignored Brandon’s arm and ran forwards to embrace her.
“Jade,” Leah said with a happy sigh as she pulled of her mask and returned the embrace. “You’re alive.”
“So are you.”
“All thanks to your man, we couldn’t have made it out of that herd if it wasn’t for him,” Leah said as she gestured towards Brandon who slowly started blushing by the compliments.
“Yeah, I thought so,” Jade laughed as she pulled Brandon into a hug again. It felt safe and familiar, and as much as she loved Alden there was no other choice for her. The guilt would eat her alive but the thought of laying inside of Brandon’s arms again would surely ease her guilt for not saying goodbye.
“Take me home,” she whispered in Brandon’s ear, and she could feel his relief. His muscles relaxed and he tightened his grip on her waist. He pulled his arms back a little and all her worries and promises were forgotten when he kissed her.
